I heard the west wasn't hit that hard, but it's still pretty bad. If it's the area where the wall ended, then everything is flooded. Everytime they show Galveston Island I only see lots and lots of water. The water might be 4 to 5 feet high and directly at the coast it's said to be around 9 feet or even higher. But that's not sure.

That's so horrible. "Much of the Galveston Island is currently flooded and there are several fires in that area," the Galveston County Office of Emergency Management said on its Web site. "Many roads in the county are impassable (due) to rising water and debris." To the east, at least 1,800 homes and businesses were flooded by storm surge in Cameron Parish, Louisiana. And six feet of flood water rushed into the town of Lafitte in Louisiana's Jefferson Parish, said Chris Macaluso of Louisiana's Office of Coastal Restoration. Houston's Harris County is under a curfew that begins at 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. Sunday.

Ted Oberg reports that the city of Galveston announced at a 9:30pm press conference there is no power on the island at all. Officials believe the power might be out for weeks. Two fires are also burning. One fire was at 51 Street and one in Hollywood Heights. City officials do not believe anyone is in danger from those fires but are unsure because crews cannot get to the locations. There have been three arrests for trespassing in the city before the sun went down. The people arrested were suspected looters. No one will be allowed back on the island Saturday morning. The city will set up checkpoints to keep people out while damage is assessed. There will probably be an announcement made early Saturday afternoon about re-entry.

How in heaven's name can anyone be so stupid as to build in the face of assured 100 year hurricaines? It will be criminal for the Federal Government to grant even one cent to rebuild what will be destroyed. We the people should use our legal powers to seize title to the development of the land that will now be yet again scrubbed clean of man's audacious constructions. Shame on those who are greedy enough to think they're more powerful than nature. The seawall exists because nature classifies Galveston as a barrier island, a place for nature, and man to visit, not to think they own it. It's outrageous that there are houses or buildings on that barrier island.

Why do these people have to risk their lives when these people have chosen to stay. News: Ike is called sea monster, areas near Galveston are flooded, Ike's "eye" is at least 100km wide, the floods tear up city prior to landfall, the power around Galveston went out. A father and two daughters were rescued who wanted to stay but finally saw that it's impossible, father meant the surf was great, teenage daughter laughed and said she is not scared, everything is fine - strange people. Briges at Galveston at beach are under water - 7 to 10 feet. Those at the coast who changed their mind and want to leave might have to stay, cause it's too late. Houses were falling down as one witness said. Water is everywhere, it looks like a Tsunami. 14,9 Mio. people are in Ike's path.

No it's earlier in Texas, it's around 13:35 pm. Ike drives me crazy...
Katharina at 09-12-08 said:
I think I will stay up all night watching CNN, here it's 7:30 pm, so in Texas it's seven hours "later". But I can't just sleep knowing something big is going on there. I need to know what's going to happen. I hope no one's going to die. On CNN they say that it's possible that Galveston Island will be completely underwater. People leave, if that is going to happen, you can't be safe anywhere near Galveston!
Anonymous at 09-12-08 said:
To those who decide to hunker down.... don't expect help from the military when things get bad and you decide that, at the height of the storm, you made a dumb decision. Putting their life in jeopardy during wartime is one thing but for someone's stupidity is something they should not have to risk their lives for.
Anonymous at 09-12-08 said:
Dont be like those in New Orleans who though they could "ride it out" and rely on FEMA afterwards..Those people were found underwater some days even weeks later. You people need to get the hell away from there ASAP..
Paul from Canada at 09-12-08 said:
Don't try to be hero's , get as far away from the coast as you can. I am keeping all of you in my prayers. The storm surge is projected to be over 20 above normal tide levels. Keep safe and may god be with those who choose to stay.

natural selection lol thats so true. people that are too hard-headed might die but there will always be hard-headed people no matter who survives. I do pray that everyone stays safe. I'm at Texas A&M at College Station so this is the closest that I have ever been to a hurricane. I have lived up north in Arlington all of my life. I haven't even been in a tornado, thank god. It looks like College Station just has a tropical storm wind warning. We are going to have rain all day saturday it looks like. Everything is good now so I really don't know why they canceled school today. It's just a little windy god bless everyone :)

You can tell them, but the question is if they're going to listen. I think some are just too lazy to leave. I can't understand that. I would leave as fast as I'd be able to. Just saw CNN reporter from Galveston, people standing on the coast watching the waves and wanting to stay where they are. Reminds me a bit of Thailand, people standing on the beach seeing the water vanishing and instead of leaving being curious why it left then seeing the heavy wall of a weave but no, didn't leave until the wave crashed on the beach. So stupid. I'm sure many stay just because they're curious. Pretty stupid. I still hope no one's going to die, until so many died in Haiti and Cuba and the Domenican Republic. But I'm sure on sunday newspapers will be full of reports, that people died because they didn't left. Knowing that some of those who still stay there might die makes me extremely uncomfortable. Please leave, no joke, please leave, don't be stupid.
mike at 09-12-08 said:
You can't tell some people to leave when a hurricane comes in. We call that "Natural Selection".
GATUMA at 09-12-08 said:
C'on people get the heck outa there, dont try to be tough and get out of there. A lot of times we under estimate the power of nature and then we ask our selves why people die, when they had the chance to leave and save themselves. But I guess they dont understand, they care more for their tv and furniture than their own LIFE.
Anonymous at 09-12-08 said:
Samson, are you crazy? Just because their homes may not be Hurricane proof they should stay? No way! Leave right now! CNN correspondent just said that of the 50,000 population of Galveston only half of them left - how stupid can you be! Leave! Don't risk dying because of Ike! And if you stay and will be one of the lucky surivors don't dare to complain afterwards, it's your own fault! Please, please leave! There's nothing wrong with leaving. But everything is wrong with staying. Don't always rely on God that's so stupid, so stupid. Wish you all the best, may all of you survive, even the stupid ones who remain there.
princeton at 09-12-08 said:
To those who stay - if you die, it will be said the explanation is just natural selection. Those who don't have the brains to do what it takes to survive will always perish and those who do have the brains to survive will live on and reproduce.

Don't rely on God's sake and stay, that would be stupid. It's not God's will, it's a normal weather phenomenon which appeares once in a while. I've just seen the pics and videos on CNN and they said if you don't leave right now (coastal areas) it will be too late, and as it looks right now, the coast homes will all be flooded. They said everyone who lived at the coast or in model homes should leave right now. Others in Houston who don't live in model homes should stay, cause if not they will block the streets and people from the coast will not be able to flee. Just listen to them and don't try to be heroes by staying. It's not worth it! May NATURE bless you and IKE will let you stay alive.

Ike from Isaac meaning HE WILL LAUGH Because you disdained all my counsel, And would have none of my rebuke, I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your terror comes, When your terror comes like a storm, And your destruction comes like a whirlwind, When distress and anguish come upon you. Proverbs 1:25-27 Nation Repent for the Kingdom of God is at hand!!

I meant your possesions are not worth to risk your life. Please leave and get save.
Katharina at 09-12-08 said:
It's horrible, I hope everyone gets out as quick as they can, it's so stupid to stay. Take your most necessary possesions (Passport and so) and leave! Sanbags will be useless against the 7 meter waves! I'm in Austria and it seems that I'm the only one who's worried, but although Ike is far away from Austria, it still threatens many lives and that is an important issue. Please leave and remember that your possesions are not worth your life, get out and save your life, that is the most important thing right now, don't risk anything which may cause your death!!! I wish you guys all the best!

Update on Hurricane Ike, landfall is now expected to be in the area of Freport Texas, this is a low lying area so flooding will be extreme. I rode out Hurricane Alicia in Aug 1983 in Galveston and it was bad without water and power. Hurricane Ike is projected to be a high Cat 3 or low Cat 4 now hittting Freeport Friday night or Saturday morning. updated 09/10/208 @ 12:36
