My aunt, Helen Harper, had the Anchor Court cottages on Nags Head for nearly fifty years until she died last year. They are beautiful islands and so fragile in how nature constructed them. All the sandbagging and replenishing of the beaches are not going to keep the forces of the wind and surf from changing the islands back to their orginal state for all the building and growth for vacationers and permanent redidences making their living on this lovely stretch of properties, I am afraid. This happens every century with the sweeping of the beaches inwards from the sound, including the constant fight for the islands every time there have been a storm damage in hurricane season, and all that unfortunately has been established on the Outer Banks. I am just glad that Aunt Helen is not here to see the damages from this storm of the last two days, for all she put into the cottages and her guests from all over the country every summer over these past years, would have really broken her heart even though she has been very aware of the terrible erosian from hwen I visited in the early 80's, and never gave up the fight.

What an interesting thread. No, the outerbanks are not what they used to be. Nor is Holden Beach, nor Wilmington, nor Raleigh, nor Myrtle Beach...and not even Floyd Virginia. There are simply more people. I don't really mind the more people part as we really can't control that. What I do miss is the decline of locally owned and operated establishments. THAT is what really gives a place character. It would had been nice if zoning would had been used properly to limit the damage of the increased vistors (me being one). I have been visiting the area for well over a decade....sorry I wasn't born ther nor do I have the money to move there. But I do have a love for the slower pace of the OBX compared to MB....which is why I take my family there several times a year....usually between October and March. You see folks, it's not only the natural beauty of the area that is attractive, it is the beauty of the people of the OBX that makes me want to visit. Yes, I'd love to live there, but just can't make it on a state employees salary. Heck I'm happy to have a job and blessed to be able to visit. So, let's give the OBX a break, hope that it doesn't turn into a Myrtle Beach, and pray that the officials up and down the coast will use zoning to keep some of what we all love about the area.

My husband and I have a place in kdh,nc and he lives there from October to May, we rent the rest of the year. We are on the ocean and love it, even though we are not the sun bathers, we fish and enjoy our time at our beach condo, for those that down the outerbanks, they are just jealous they do not own or have some body who allows them to stay with them. We are striving to keep our beach clean and our area less contaminated with not allowing the stores to give out plastic bags that have been known to kill the wildlife and fish.
NOVA to OBX at 10-28-09 said:
We lived in VA Bch for years...never went to the beach...too "touristy"....now, 30 ys later, we LOVE our condo in KDH (sound side)...only go the beach occasionally. Fm May to Oct (tourist season) we time EVERYTHING, but once you know when to go where, all's well. Otherwise, we watch the water, sky, wildlife. GREAT all year long! Then again, complete isolation is NOT what I'm looking for, and I've found one "gets" what one "puts out!" A smile and remembering that we're all doing the best we can with what we've got go a long, long way!

Thinking of relocating to a QUAINT (any suggestions???? Please!) NC town so vacationed here 9-09, staying in Edenton (out of this WORLD library!!), New Bern & Wilmington w/side trip to Kitty Hawk. I thought we'd be "in the middle of no where" & was absolutely shocked at the strip malls, vacation rentals, etc.; ick. I spent a day only (traveling cross-country) in St. Augustine Beach, FL & it was basically 'deserted' & OH, so beautiful; thought Kitty Hawk would be the same; sorely disappointed. Oh well, to each his own.

I'm from NJ (grew up in the South, but now live in the North) - the comment that OBX is like the Jersey shore is way off base. We love Duck, Corolla and all parts on the northern part of the island. While I agree that the KDH section and further south is a bit more touristy, no part of it is really like the Jersey shore.

I live and work on the Outer Banks and I do find myself looking forward to September when there are less people here, but I accept that it's a tourist area and that we will have lots of people here from June to Sept. I don't understand why people have to be so rude and get all worked up calling each other names. That doesn't solve the problems of the Outer Banks. The place has been over built with rental homes with no thought to infrastructure! It's greed that created the over building. It's not the tourists fault nor the locals fault. It's the fault of the government here for letting it become what it has.
Rod from NC at 08-20-09 said:
I've been going to OBX for over 50 years, and have seen it change from a very sparsely developed beach into NEW JERSEY SOUTH. I don't go there anymore. It was nice while it lasted, but I can't recommend it to anyone anymore.

I spent 12 years on the OBX - mostly in KDH - before moving to Australia and I can't wait to get back there. And I consider myself a transplant, not a native. In fact, I never met anyone not born on the OBX who thought of themselves as natives. Locals yes, not natives.

I plan to arrive Monday for my 10th or 12th time (I come twice a year) and love it. Used up all the touristy stuff and just sit around and read now (when it rains I might go shopping) ... it's my chance to eat fish ... I am a terrible fish cook, so I eat seafood every day.
EGO at 06-16-09 said:
Pete O Just in case you visitors dont know the beach front to the high water mark is owned by the ocean front property owners who pay huge amounts of taxes. Most of us welcome our visitors and could not afford to keep paying the taxes with out the rental income, please keep coming and please keep our beaches clean.

We have been going to Outer Banks now for a combined total of several years-WE LOVE IT. Yes we are tourists, but not by choice. I would love to live there yearround forever but at this point in my life, it is not possible. Thanks to all of you who own businesses and homes and so very graciously share your beautiful homes/island with us for a few very precious days out of the year. I wish you all of the best. I envy those that get to see God's glorious handywork each and every day. What a site to wake to each day. As far as the traffic/tourism, you take the good with the bad and hopefully make the best of it. Keep up the good work!! Hope to visit soon...

I'm a Virginia native, southern Idahoan now, but we try to get back to Nags Head each summer to see family. We live in the high plains desert now, a far cry from the picture above. The traffic, the mobbed stores are insane when we visit the Outer Banks, but it's a refreshing break from the sauna we leave behind. I look forward to returning in 2009, will visit this website often until then.

We have been going to the Outer Banks for 14 years, and we love it there. The locals have always been really nice and it really is like our second home. I do think people should respect the beaches and the wildlife. We have seen more garbage on the beach than there used to be.So, I understand where your coming from. I wish it wasnt growing so fast, but I do understand where the locals are coming from. You have a beautiful island and great people, and you want it to stay that way. I remember one year, people were climbing the dunes, even though there was a sign asking people not to. If you climb the dunes , it won't hold during a hurricane and theres nothing to protect the homes. So, I agree with the locals and respect the land and wildlife.

Just returned last night from OBX love it, go every year during Labor Day week, and will continue to go.We do not get a break just because we are vacationers, we pay just as much as you locals do for food, groceries, etc.We do not know our way around down there like the locals but we not once have encountered a rude person.
Duck-ee at 09-06-08 said:
I have owned a small home on the northern Outer Banks for about 15 years. We actually lose money renting it every year. The insurance costs go up about 20 percent a year and the real estate agencies have gone from collecting a 17 percent commission to charging marketing fees and getting 19 percent + application fees per rental on top of the actual rental fee. The trafic has gotten so bad that if I don't take back road from the bridge it can take up to an hour to get from the Food Lion to Duck. The real estate agents were talking about the bridge to Corolla 15 years ago and numerous studies later - nothing but more traffic. I can't believe that the idiots in muni/county govt allowed so many 5 and 6 bedroom houses to be built north of Duck - did they think every one would drive down in one vehicle. All it is going to take is one major evacuation and unfortunately a couple fatalities during a storm for the officials to finally realize that another bridge is necessary to get folks on and off. I can't wait unttil I retire and no longer need to rent my house. I love the beach....and some of the restaurants...but I don't really need to subsidize vacations of others who probably make more bucks than I do much longer than I have to.
OBXer at 09-06-08 said:
These comments are absurd. Everyone who lives here knows that it's the visitors that keep food in our bellies and a roof over our heads. Most of us who have lived here forever don't have any problem with "tourist season," it's our lives. We expect that from Memorial Day to Labor Day traffic will be hectic, Wal-Mart will be packed, Food Lion will run out of milk every Saturday, and Duck Rd. will be loaded with bikers who refuse to use the bike path. We know all of this! We love living here! My favorite thing about summer is the smell of sun screen mixed with the salty ocean air. It's awesome! We're glad you keep coming back and those who don't like it, can move.
OBX Vacationer at 09-06-08 said:
Love the OBX and come every year!! Our family will continue to visit regardless of the locals opinions...they haven't ever affected our vacation time there!! The best advice I can give to the complaining LOCALS is to move to an area that's not a tourist attraction! Wow, that was hard! Furthermore, if you want to blame someone, blame your state who has brought in revenue from that area. Afterall, they're the ones who have built that area up by playing on...the TOURISTS, not the locals!! Huge money making area for the state of NC!!
TMac at 09-05-08 said:
God bless the American Idiot! Are you Outer Banks natives kidding??? Maybe during the winter I'll sell my vaca home there and keep my Yankee $ up Nawth so y'all can create another industry to support yourselves - oh, my bad - in order to create industry there has to be a need, and according to y'all you don't need anything/anyone but your own idiotic selves!! Last I checked the taxes I pay on my "big 'ol vacation home" pay for the roads/schools you use when I'm not there, so I know you don't mean it when you say you wish a hurricane would sweep it into the ocean. Stop being a bunch of punk-a** whiners and be grateful that you have a great source of revenue.
Anonymous at 09-05-08 said:
You OBX locals are insane...like you are never a tourist anywhere. I am a native of the DC area for some 50+ years and we sure have our share of tourists and people coming here to live from other cities. If we were to get our noses out of joint everytime we encountered a "come-here"..well, we would be upset 24 hrs a day. Your attitude to out-of-towners is, as I said, insane. If you feel like that about tourists, then I suggest you "locals" never leave that island.

Anonymous at 08-17-08 said:
The Outer banks was just fine with shutting down in the winter the only ones complaining were the locals that just moved here and the only thing keeping us afloat would be the sandbar we livc on and you want to take from so that we can keep your oceanfront homes from falling into the ocean well I hope the next hurricane or northeastern comes takes all the homes down so we can continue to keep you out.You come here because you say it is nice area you move here because you want to get away from your area. Then what happens you want more from our area starbucks and dunckin dounuts, then your kids bring in there I'm better than you mouth then start gangs and buy and do drugs because there parents are too busy driving down 158 hwy talking on there cell going 28mph to the bank to give there kids more money to keep them out of there hair.

I simply stated that everyone is a tourist at some point, and it wouldn't be right to treat a tourist incorrectly just b/c they are in your area Jason. I have never disrespected an area's wildlife, in fact it makes me sick that someone would so such a thing. I had no clue that tourists did such a horrible thing to your wild horses. I think the point is to treat others the way you wish to be treated...I deal with tourist where I live around during "prime time golf season" and I don't lash out at them on a Weather web page. Where I become irritated is where tourists are grouped as one entity of annoyance. We are truly not all the same. I prefer the lack of commercial build up....I can eat at Applebees where I live now...I prefer eating and giving my money to a Ma' and Pop joint where they probably produce better food anyway. So, please...don't put us all in the same category.
obx girl at 07-13-08 said:
I grew up on the Outer Banks and my family is still there. I lived there before it became commercialized and when there was actually land in between houses. Now there Hooters, Applebees, and houses everywhere you turn. We know that is the price we pay for living in an area like that, but you also have to understand we were there when the Outer Banks had raw beauty. There have also been several cases of our wild horses dying because drunk tourist thought it would be cool to chase them down in a car with ropes and rope them up. We know that not all tourist are bad..when I lived there...I worked in resorts and other tourist geared places...I know you help keep the $$$ flowing. All that is asked is please respect the wild life especially the wild horses. I was just vacationing at a Beach in South Carolina near Charleston and it is nice to see that there is a beach out there that is not commercialized...I wish the obx could have remained that way! Happy Vacationing!

Just got back from OBX Nags Head , never have we ever in 14 years had a problem with the locals. The main thing that is bothering us now is all the employees that CANT SPEAK ENGLISH! i grew up on the banks in the late 80's and early 90's and i was able to enjoy the area while it was still somewhat mellow. I saw that stupid comment fromsomebody below that says that she does not care what the locals think of out of control tourism, that they should just put up with it, mujer you have a lot to learn, its people like you who have helped destroy little by little what once was a jewel. It makes me very sad to see what has happened to the area and the skyrocketing property values.

My sister lives down in Manteo and her husband is a native of the Outer Banks. They know that tourism is important to the economy. However, you have to understand that they live there. They have to get to work on time, shop for groceries, get from point A to B in a reasonable amount of time etc. Sometimes it gets frustrating when there are so many people on the beach at one time. People who have lived in the Outer Banks for years know that tourism is key but you can't blaim them when their patients runs out when it takes 20 minutes to go 1 mile. Tourist be understanding - Locals be patient.

The meaning of a tourist is "One who travels for pleasure"....so Banks Local, you have never traveled anywhere for pleasure? The point is, that most people at one time or another have traveled for pleasure...which more than likely includes you....so shut it.
